What's the Right Tyre Pressure for Your Car?

It’s one of those things most drivers know they should check but rarely do tyre pressure. Getting it right makes a genuine difference, not just to fuel economy and tyre lifespan, but to how safely your car handles in wet weather or during an emergency stop.

Every car has a recommended tyre pressure set by the manufacturer, and it’s usually easier to find than you’d think. You’ll see it printed on a sticker inside the driver’s door frame, on the inside of the fuel cap, or in your vehicle handbook. It’s typically shown in PSI or BAR. The recommended figure can also differ between front and rear axles, and may change depending on how heavily loaded the car is.

Where to Find Your Car’s Tyre Pressure Specification

  • Inside the driver’s door frame or door jamb
  • On a sticker inside the fuel filler cap
  • In your vehicle’s owner’s manual
  • Our in-store team can look it up for you using your registration number

If you’re ever unsure, just ask us. Checking and setting your tyre pressure is something we do as standard with every tyre fitting, and we’re happy to do it for you any time you’re passing through Worcester.

How to Find the Right Tyre Size for Your Vehicle

If you’ve ever stood in front of your car staring at the sidewall and wondering what all those numbers mean, you’re not alone. Your tyre size is printed on the side of every tyre and follows a standard format — something like 205/55 R16 91V. Here’s what each part tells you:

  • 205 — The width of the tyre in millimetres
  • 55 — The aspect ratio, or how tall the sidewall is as a percentage of the width
  • R16 — The diameter of the wheel rim in inches
  • 91V — The load index (91) and speed rating (V)

That said, you don’t need to memorise any of this. If you bring us your registration number, we can identify the correct tyre specification for your car instantly. It’s the quickest and most reliable way to make sure you’re buying the right tyres — and it takes about thirty seconds.

Tyre Brands We Stock From Economy to Premium

We don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all approach to tyres. Different drivers have different needs and different budgets, which is why we stock a full range from economy through to premium so you can choose what works for you without compromising on safety.

Economy Tyres

Our economy tyres are designed for drivers who want a safe, reliable tyre at the lowest possible cost. They meet all UK legal safety requirements and perform perfectly well for everyday driving particularly for shorter journeys, city use, or older vehicles where investing in premium rubber doesn’t make financial sense. Brands include: Atlas, Brics, Compasal, Delinte, Firemax, Goodride, Hifly, Imperial, Infinity, Kpatos, Kustone, Lanvigator, Mileking, Milever, Sunny, Sunwide, Torque and Winrun.

Mid-Range Tyres

Mid-range tyres are where the value really starts to show. You get noticeably better wet-weather grip, improved fuel efficiency, and a longer tread life compared to economy options without the price tag of a premium brand. For most everyday drivers, a good mid-range tyre is the sweet spot between cost and performance. Brands include: Admiral, Avon, Churchill, Cooper, Dynamo, Hankook, General, Kumho, Maxxis, Roadx, Three A and Yokohama.

Premium Tyres

Premium tyres are built to a higher standard full stop. The rubber compounds, tread designs, and construction methods used by the leading manufacturers translate into shorter stopping distances, more precise handling, greater comfort, and longer overall lifespan. If you drive a newer or higher-performance vehicle, premium tyres are worth the investment. Brands include: BFGoodrich, Bridgestone, Continental, Dunlop, Goodyear, Michelin, Pirelli, Uniroyal and Vredestein.

Part Worn Tyres in Worcester

For drivers working with a tight budget, part worn tyres can be a practical short-term solution. We inspect every part worn tyre we sell to make sure it meets UK legal standards that means checking for sufficient tread depth, no sidewall damage, no internal structural issues, and no repairs that compromise safety. You won’t find us selling tyres we wouldn’t put on our own cars.

PROUD STOCKISTS OF THE FOLLOWING BRANDS

Summer Tyres — The Best Choice for Warm Weather Driving

If you’re doing most of your driving between spring and autumn, summer tyres are genuinely the better tyre for UK conditions during those months. They’re made from a harder rubber compound that’s engineered to perform at its best when road temperatures are above 7°C  which gives you better grip, more responsive handling, and shorter stopping distances in both dry and wet conditions.

The difference between a good summer tyre and a budget alternative becomes most apparent in wet weather, where the tread design plays a crucial role in clearing water from the contact patch and preventing aquaplaning. We stock summer tyres across all budget levels, so whether you’re after a reliable economy option or a high-performance tyre from a leading manufacturer, we can help.

Winter Tyres in Worcester — Affordable Options with Same-Day Fitting

Winter tyres often get dismissed as unnecessary in the UK but they make a real difference. Once temperatures drop below 7°C, the rubber in a standard summer tyre starts to harden, which reduces grip and increases your stopping distance. Winter tyres use a softer compound that stays flexible in the cold, and their tread patterns are specifically designed to bite into wet, icy, or snow-covered roads.

Studies suggest winter tyres can reduce stopping distances on icy roads by as much as 11 metres compared to summer tyres at the same speed. That’s not a small margin it’s the difference between stopping safely and not stopping in time.

We offer a range of affordable winter tyres across all budget tiers, with same-day fitting available at our Worcester centre for most popular sizes. If you’re looking to prepare your car ahead of the colder months, give us a call or come in and we’ll sort you out.

All-Season Tyres — Year-Round Performance Without the Seasonal Swap

Not every driver wants the hassle of switching between summer and winter tyres twice a year. All-season tyres sometimes called season tyres are designed to offer a workable compromise for drivers in climates where winters are cold but not extreme. They’re rated for use in temperatures above and below 7°C, offer reasonable performance on light snow, and can be kept on the car year-round.

They’re not going to outperform a dedicated summer tyre in July or match the grip of a winter tyre in a snowstorm, but for the majority of UK drivers particularly those in milder areas they offer a genuinely practical solution. Come into our Worcester store and we’ll talk through whether all-season tyres are a good fit for how and where you drive.

Run-Flat Tyres — Keep Moving After a Puncture

Run-flat tyres have reinforced sidewalls that allow the tyre to continue supporting the weight of the vehicle even after a puncture. In most cases you can drive up to around 50 miles at a reduced speed  typically no more than 50mph giving you enough time to reach a safe location or a tyre centre without having to change a tyre at the roadside.

Many modern vehicles  particularly BMWs, Minis, and various other European models  come fitted with run-flat tyres as standard and don’t carry a spare wheel. If your car is one of these, it’s important to replace punctured tyres with the correct run-flat specification. Fitting a standard tyre to a vehicle set up for run-flats can affect handling and, in some cases, compromise safety.

Our Worcester team can identify the correct run-flat tyre for your vehicle and fit it while you wait.

Understanding the Markings on Your Tyre Sidewall

The sidewall of a tyre contains more useful information than most people realise. Once you know what you’re looking at, it tells you everything from the tyre’s dimensions to whether it’s safe to drive in snow. Here’s a quick breakdown:

  • Tyre size — the numbers and letters that tell you the width, profile, and rim diameter (e.g. 205/55 R16)
  • Load index — a number indicating the maximum weight each tyre can safely carry
  • Speed rating — a letter (H, V, W, Y etc.) indicating the maximum sustained speed the tyre is rated for
  • M+S marking or Three-Peak Mountain Snowflake symbol — confirms the tyre is suitable for winter or all-season use
  • ‘Run Flat’, ‘ROF’, or ‘SSR’ marking — indicates the tyre is a run-flat type
  • Direction arrow — on directional tyres, this must be pointing the correct way when fitted
  • Tyre brand and model name

If any of this leaves you scratching your head, don’t worry  that’s what we’re here for. Bring your car into our Worcester centre and we’ll read the sidewall, identify what you need, and recommend the right replacement.

Professional Tyre Fitting in Worcester

Buying the right tyres is important, but having them fitted correctly matters just as much. A tyre that’s been poorly mounted, incorrectly balanced, or inflated to the wrong pressure won’t perform as it should and in some cases, it can actually be dangerous.

Our technicians in Worcester fit tyres every day, and they take the time to do it properly. Every fitting includes:

  • Safe removal and responsible disposal of your old tyres
  • Professional mounting and balancing of your new tyres
  • Inflation to the manufacturer’s recommended pressure
  • TPMS sensor check and reset where applicable
  • Valve replacement if needed
  • A visual inspection of your brakes and suspension while your wheels are off

We offer flexible appointment times and same-day fitting for most tyre sizes we have in stock. You’re welcome to wait in our centre while the work is carried out  most standard fitting jobs take less than an hour.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find out what tyre size I need?

The easiest way is to look at the sidewall of one of your current tyres — you’ll see a sequence like 205/55 R16 91V printed there. That’s your tyre size. Alternatively, check inside the driver’s door frame or your vehicle handbook. If you’d rather skip the searching, just give us your registration number and we’ll find the correct size for you.

Your vehicle manufacturer will have specified the correct tyre pressure for your car — you’ll find it on a sticker inside the driver’s door, on the fuel cap, or in your owner’s manual. The recommended pressure can vary between front and rear tyres and may change depending on load. When we fit your tyres, we set the pressure to the correct level as standard.

Summer tyres use a harder rubber compound that performs best in temperatures above 7°C, giving you better grip and efficiency in warm weather. Winter tyres use a softer compound that stays flexible in cold temperatures, which means better traction, shorter stopping distances, and safer handling when the mercury drops. If you regularly experience cold winters, switching to winter tyres is well worth considering.

Yes — we stock quality part worn tyres at our Worcester store. Every tyre we sell is inspected before it goes on the shelf to make sure it’s safe and legal. We check tread depth, sidewall condition, and structural integrity as standard. Part worn tyres are a good option if you’re looking to keep costs down in the short term.

Absolutely. You can choose your tyres online and then book a fitting appointment with us in Worcester. We stock a wide range of popular sizes, so same-day fitting is often available. Book ahead if you can — it means we’ll have everything ready for when you arrive.

We stock tyres across all budget levels — economy, mid-range, and premium. Our economy range gives you a safe, legal tyre at the lowest price. Mid-range tyres offer better performance and longevity for a modest step up in cost. Premium tyres come from the leading global manufacturers and offer the best all-round performance. Ask our team in Worcester about specific brands when you visit — stock varies and we can advise based on your vehicle and budget.

Run-flat tyres have reinforced sidewalls that let you keep driving after a puncture — usually up to around 50 miles at 50mph. Many modern vehicles, particularly BMW and Mini models, come with run-flats fitted as standard and no spare wheel. If your car uses run-flat tyres, you need to replace them with the correct run-flat specification. Our team can confirm whether your vehicle requires run-flats when you visit.

For many UK drivers, yes. All-season tyres let you avoid the twice-yearly swap between summer and winter tyres, and they handle comfortably across a range of conditions including light snow and cold temperatures. They won’t be the best tyre in extreme conditions either way, but for most everyday driving in the UK, they’re a sensible and convenient choice. Come in and we can talk through whether they’d suit your driving habits

It varies quite a bit depending on how you drive, what vehicle you have, and how well the tyres are maintained. As a rough guide, most tyres last somewhere between 20,000 and 40,000 miles. The UK legal minimum tread depth is 1.6mm, but we generally recommend replacing tyres at around 3mm for the best safety margins — particularly in wet conditions.

Yes, for most popular tyre sizes that we have in stock, same-day fitting is available. Give us a call to check availability for your tyre size, or come in and we’ll do our best to fit you in as quickly as possible.

The speed rating is the letter at the end of the tyre size code — for example, the V in 205/55 R16 91V. It indicates the maximum sustained speed the tyre is designed to handle safely. Common ratings include H (up to 130mph), V (up to 149mph), W (up to 168mph), and Y (up to 186mph). It’s a legal requirement to fit tyres with at least the speed rating specified by your vehicle manufacturer.

While it’s technically legal, it’s generally better to have matching tyres — at least in pairs on the same axle — for consistent handling and braking behaviour. If you need to mix for any reason, we’d always advise fitting the better-performing tyre to the rear axle for stability. Our team can advise on the best approach for your specific vehicle.
